A trip to Mexico can be a once in a lifetime experience for some people, and just a regular holiday for others. But regardless if you’ve never been before or if this is your twentieth visit, if you’re planning a trip to Mexico then here are some things you can do to prepare for your trip beforehand.
If you’re a native English speaker, then you’ll probably be used to everyone being able to speak English all the time. And although you will find people within the tourist industry can speak English, if you want to visit more local restaurants or have a better experience I couldn’t recommend learning some Spanish more.
Here are some ways you can learn a bit of Spanish before you go. First I would recommend downloading the app Duolingo. It’s fun, it’s interactive and it will teach you a lot of Spanish vocabulary very quickly. Secondly, I would recommend finding a good Spanish book to read to help you. You’ll need a book for your trip anyway, so why not one in Spanish. Lingo Press Books have a great selection of Spanish books for beginners to get you started. Finally I would recommend finding some Spanish speakers in your area to practise with. You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to find language partners.
It’s very easy to just think Mexico is hot so I’ll take my bikini. But Mexico is enormous, and with large countries comes different climates that you may not have taken into consideration.
Some parts of Mexico can be humid and hot, while other have more arid conditions. And in some places, you’ll be surprised to find out that you can even be cold. Make sure you research the regions you’re going to visit carefully before you go and pack accordingly. You don’t want to show up with your bikini and be wishing you’d brought a jumper.
Also if you are from a cooler climate, remember that parts of Mexico can be really hot. Try and protect yourself from the sun, especially if you have paler skin.
But don’t worry; this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. You just need some careful planning, that’s all.
Mexico has fun and interesting festivals that are different from other countries. If you’re flexible with the time you can travel, then it might be worth your while timing your vacation to coincide with one of the major Mexican festivals.
Mexico has a few but the most famous would probably be Day of the Dead. Of course, by featuring in popular culture, the Day of the Dead has become more and more popular and you might find that some places are getting overrun with tourtists. Another holiday you could check out is the Cinco de Mayo. Which ever one you choose, the holidays will be rich with Mexican culture and will definitely be something that you would like to experience.
Spring break is a popular American holiday that leads thousands of students to parts of Mexico every year. During this time of year, they party, drink and can be a bit of a nuisance. If you like to party this may be the time of year for you. But if you want to avoid higher prices, drunk students and busy streets then this may be a time that you try to avoid.
Obviously not all of Mexico is flooded with spring breakers but there are definitely some areas which are more popular than others, for example Cancún. This shouldn’t be too much of an issue but if you’re looking for some peace and quiet on your holiday then you may want to consider timing it for a different part of the year.
Mexico may be different in terms of health to the country that you’re from, so make sure you have all vaccinations that you need and if it’s necessary to take medication while you’re there, make sure you’re all stocked up.
Do you need a visa to enter Mexico? Make sure to check out the visa requirements from your country to enter Mexico. And if this is something you do need, make sure you’ve applied for one well in advance to avoid disappointment.
It may sound overkill, but make sure you check out where the embassy is, and what to do if you get into trouble. Hopefully nothing bad will happen on your holiday but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
So these are the things that I would recommend doing to prepare for your trip to Mexico. If you go with an open mind, try and embrace the culture and make the most out of your time there, then I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
