The British School of Kuwait was founded in 1978 and has a prominent location in Salwa, a suburb adjacent to the Arabian Gulf some 15kms south of Kuwait City centre. The school caters for students from Créche to Year 13 and currently has a role of 3300 students. Courses follow the National Curriculum of England, modified to meet the requirements of the Kuwait Ministry of Education by including Arabic, Social Studies of Kuwait (Y5 to Y8) and Islamic Studies for Muslim students. All teaching in the English language is by teachers recognised as such in the United Kingdom. The school is committed to the continual professional development (CPD) of its staff. Recent developments with the school’s virtual learning environment (VLE) are supported by interactive whiteboards in every classroom and a wireless computer network. The school is selective with applicants sitting entrance tests at appropriate ages as well as formal interviews. The strength of the academic programme is reflected in excellent examination results and students gaining places in leading universities. A strong emphasis on a rounded education is supported by a diverse and extensive range of extra-curricular activities. For example, the school is very successful in sport and enters a wide range of tournaments. In the Arts, music, drama, dance, fine art, ceramics, graphics, photography and design technology are all prominent, each with exhibitions, festivals or large-scale productions. The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award scheme is dynamic with overseas expeditions at bronze, silver and gold levels. The Model United Nations and Debating are both extremely popular. Â Students from BSK have participated at the World Schools Championships since 2003. Â The school has a wide range of facilities including eleven fully-resourced science laboratories, a heated swimming pool, sports courts, four dance studios, a drama studio, a music performance studio and a fully equipped theatre. |
